In the remote folds of Pakistan’s Hindu Kush, where snow-capped peaks guard centuries of stories, the Choimus Kalash Winter Festival brings life to the quiet valleys with fire, rhythm, and joy. Each December, as winter deepens, the Kalash people gather to honor their ancestors, purify their spirits, and welcome the solstice with song and celebration.
This 11-day journey is an invitation to witness a living heritage, one of dance, ritual and devotion that bridges the ancient and the eternal. You’ll travel through the storied landscapes of Swat, Chitral and Peshawar, exploring Buddhist ruins, royal forts, and colorful bazaars before arriving in the Kalash Valleys, where the Choimus Festival unfolds in a whirl of bonfires, chanting and laughter.

Arrive at Islamabad International Airport and meet your representative for a warm welcome. After check-in and rest, begin your journey through the capital’s cultural landmarks, the majestic Faisal Mosque, symbolic Pakistan Monument and the rich exhibits at Lok Virsa Museum. As twilight falls, visit Daman-e-Koh for sweeping views of the city under the soft glow of evening lights.

Begin your ascent into the Hindu Kush Mountains toward the hidden Kalash Valleys home to one of the world’s oldest and most unique cultures. The winding mountain road reveals sweeping views of rugged cliffs and turquoise rivers. By late afternoon, arrive in Bumburet, the largest of the Kalash Valleys, where wooden homes cling to terraced slopes and warm smiles greet you. As dusk settles, stroll through the village, breathing in wood smoke and the scent of juniper in the cold mountain air.

Choimus is the Kalash people’s winter solstice festival, celebrating purification, gratitude, and renewal. It involves sacred rituals, singing, dancing, and offerings to deities, marking the transition into a new year.
The festival is celebrated annually in mid to late December in the Kalash valleys of Bumburet, Rumbur, and Birir.
This is a moderate cultural journey with light walking and some uneven terrain in the valleys. No trekking experience is required. However, the winters are dry and harsh.
